Seasonal Tips

Winter Maintenance

Fish should be disturbed as little as possible in Winter as anything that causes them to move around unnecessarily will sap their energy reserves.

Inspect your pond regularly to make sure everything is working i.e. pump, filter and U.V., feeding can be virtually suspended unless long mild periods prevail, remember to remove any uneaten food rotten in your filter over the winter as this will only cause trouble. Feed a Wheatgerm diet early in the day so the fish have time to digest before nightfall, DO NOT FEED DURING PROLONGED COLD PERIODS.

Due to climate change the build up of ice on a pond is becoming less frequent, should this happen break a few holes in the ice to let any build up of gasses escape so your fish don’t suffocate.

You probably won’t see much of your fish this time of year as they congregate together in the warmest part of your pond usually the deepest point. It is wise to raise your pond pump off the bottom of your to just below the surface so you are still exchanging water but not cooling the whole water column rapidly.

Keep Pond cover nets on against predators as this is the time of year that young herons will be hungry and also stating their claim on new territory.
