Seasonal Tips Summer Maintenance Ensure filters and pump intakes are kept clean as to maximise the flow through this will ensure a good rapid exchange of pond water, Oxygen is a real issue during prolonged spells of hot weather watch out for fish grouping together at water inlets, under waterfalls or on the surface taking gasps of air. Oxygen test kits are affordable and readily available. Use an airpump and airstones and or exchange pond water using mains through a hose pump remembering to fit a spray attachment hose when filling and fizz the water in as to help disperse the chlorine or for high chlorine areas use a dechlorinator to filter water first. Shade is also important for your pond and fish, this will reduce the risk of sun burn on koi and pale skinned fish. This will also help keep down algae levels i.e. (green water and blanket weed) which will reduce oxygen levels. Use lilies to cover 25% of pond surface area or external shading such as pergolas or sails. Feeding is a pleasure at this time of year hand feeding especially. This time of year koi and goldfish will eat when ever food is presented to them and you can indulge them providing your filter is able to cope with the extra loading. Test water regularly for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and feed accordingly. Food types suitable Growth/Beauty, both balanced with the right protein, lipids and minerals for this time of year.
