Seasonal Tips Autumn Maintenance At this time of year your fish should be in their prime and still feeding well and you should continue regular feeding to beef up your fish in preparation for Winter feeding little and often is preferred but if your out all day an automatic feeder might be a worthwhile investment, use low protein mixed with a little wheatgerm diet as its easier digested as the temperature comes down. Health is something to look out for as any injuries will take longer to heal as water temperature drops and intervention may be required as to reduce the risk of bacterial/secondary infection. Towards the end of October leaves will be falling and now is a good time to add a pond skimmer to your pond this will reduce the amount of debris sinking to the bottom of your pond , no organic matter should be allowed to rot in your pond over the winter period, pond cover nets can also be used to help reduce pond debris building up. Pond filters should be cleaned in preparation for winter, pond pumps should be left running throughout the Winter so now is a good time to lift and check/service your pump, clean your UV’s quartz sleeve of any build up of limescale that may have built up over the Summer, no need to replace UV bulb at this time and as air temperature falls, air frosts and wind chill will further reduce your water temp. a few simple measures can reduce rapid cooling of your pond as not to stress your fish, water falls should be turned off , if the waterfall is fed directly from your filter simply fit a bypass pipe and return the water via this to just below the pond surface, switch off any fountain pumps these will drastically reduce pond temp rapidly. Pond covers and pond heaters are also available but this should not be necessary in our climate For any further information tips or advice on treatments or products contact Tranquil Water Gardens on 091 700300 Or email info@tranquilwatergardens.ie |
